I know I've never really blogged about sex toys here, not in detail anyway, but I do read a lot of sex toy review sites, and over the past year especially, I've learnt a lot about the sort of sex toys that are good, and the kind of sex toys which are bad.

When I started out buying sex toys, I have to admit, I bought a lot of the cheap, jelly type dildos.  You know, the type that has an overpowering smell when you open the packaging, and leaves greasy stains on any paper of fabric you leave it on for too long?  And I (as many others) thought that was normal.  Until I had an experience with a dildo that left me thinking that something was definitely not right.

The dildo in question was a big, black, double ended dildo.  Very soft and flexible.  And I was enjoying myself with it quite a bit, until I realised something didn't feel quite right.  Very quickly "not quite right" turned into "OMG, it burns, it burns", and me sitting in the shower, with the shower head aimed at my cunt, trying to wash off whatever was irritating me, and cool down the area at the same time. That was the point where I decided that maybe I needed to pay more attention to what I put in my cunt, but I didn't really know a lot about what toys would be better.

After a little while of reading  Hey Epiphora! and Dangerous Lilly, I realised that these jelly toys I'd always bought, or had given to me were not as great as they should be.  That there were potentially dangerous chemicals in them, which were leeching out, and that they were porous - meaning they could never be cleaned properly. But I also realised that there were better alternatives, and made the decision to only use these better alternatives on myself and those I played with.

My toy box now only contains toys made of silicone, glass, and metal.  Materials that aren't going to leave residue everywhere, that are healthy for my body, and can easily be sterilised.  My body has been very happy with the change.  But for some reason (probably because I have slight hoarder tendancies), I kept a couple of the jelly toys I bought several years ago.

Re-arranging my office space last week, I came across these toys, iIn a box that hadn't been opened since I moved here a year ago, and put them aside to throw out.  Before I could though, I was reminded of the jar of melted sex toys that Dangerous Lilly has blogged about, and decided to create my own jar of dildos.

Before I put the toys in the jar, both were sticky and left an oily residue on my hands when I handled them.  After just 24 hours, I could see obvious liquid beading on the white one.  Both have already discoloured significantly from when I bought them - the entire shaft of the white one was a similar colour to the colour the head is now, and the other one was a lot brighter pink all over.

I'm expecting similar results to the ones that Lilly has seen, and I've already made the decision to not use these sorts of toy in my own play now, but I'm curious to see what happens.

If you'd like more information about what sort of sex toys are safe to use on the body, Dangerous Lilly has compiled a lot of blog posts with some very good information.
